This doll is immediately recognisable as Archbishop Desmond Tutu who was a leading figure in South Africa in the struggle against apartheid. When asked for his permission to use his likeness his characteristic good humour shone through when he said that he wholeheartedly gave his permission but he doubted anyone would want to buy him. Our sales figures would disagree with the Archbishop!

The doll is made by a group of women based in Khayelitsha which is on the Cape Flats just outside Cape Town. It is one of the oldest townships in South Africa and has an unemployment rate of over 50%.
